What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine practiced around the world with growing use here in the United States since the 1970’s, but has is origins in Traditional Oriental Medicine. Acupuncture is administered by a trained professional and involves the gentle insertion of hair-thin, disposable and sterile acupuncture needles at specific locations within the skin of the body.  There are over 2,000 known acupuncture points on the human body that connect 14 major pathways, called meridians that conduct Qi (or energy) throughout the body. These “meridian” channels are much like the plumbing in a house, all intricately connected for proper flow without clogging or backing up, and without excessive flow or leaking.  The Qi energy is involved with emotional, mental and physical health and wellness. When the flow of Qi energy becomes disrupted (limited or excessive in different areas of the body) and out of balance during  health ailments, injury, poor lifestyle habits or other circumstances then emotional, mental and physical health can suffer with the development of pain and/or disease. Acupuncture helps to keep the Qi flowing through the body in a balanced manner, unblocking clogged up areas while restraining areas of excess and leakage thus aiding our body’s natural ability to be healthy and heal itself.   It's like unclogging the house's plumbing in some areas so the water can flow, and like fixing any leaks and closing any wide-open faucets that are wasting water and causing damage.

What does Acupuncture Feel Like?

The needles are very, very thin and most people barely feel them when inserted, although individual experiences vary and different body regions vary with sensitivity. If any discomfort is experienced, it is usually mild and temporary.  The acupuncture treatment is safe when performed by a trained professional and conducted with standardized, sterile technique.
